How the Robot effect works
Ring modulation multiplies your voice by a steady sine wave. At 30–80 Hz the result is the clanging, metallic tone used for sci-fi robots since the 1960s. A vocoder instead measures the loudness of your voice in 16 frequency bands and imposes it on a buzzing synth tone, so every syllable lands on one flat pitch.
Tips for a better robot voice
- Lower Ring Hz (30) sounds harsher and more mechanical; higher (120+) sounds alien.
- Speak in an even rhythm; robots do not use expressive pitch anyway.
- Try Android for a talking-computer monotone.
