How the Helium effect works
Real helium does not change your vocal cords' pitch. Sound travels about 2.7 times faster in helium than in air, which raises the resonances of your vocal tract so the voice sounds thin and cartoonish. A pitch shifter is a simpler approximation that raises everything; the preset also trims the lows so it stays tinny.
Tips for a better helium voice
- Inhaling real helium can cause asphyxiation; this effect exists so you never need to.
- Short Grain (20 ms) keeps extreme upward shifts crisp.
- Chipmunk (+9) is a slightly less extreme alternative.

Why does helium make your voice high?
Sound moves faster in helium, raising the resonant frequencies (formants) of your throat and mouth. Your vocal cords vibrate at nearly the same rate.
Is breathing helium dangerous?
It can be. Helium displaces oxygen, and poison-control and medical sources warn against inhaling it, especially from pressurised tanks.
