How the Young Boy effect works
Children have shorter vocal tracts and smaller vocal folds, so their voices are both higher and thinner. The preset shifts pitch +6 semitones with a short 28 ms grain (cleaner for upward shifts), cuts the low shelf by 6 dB, raises the low-cut filter to 180 Hz and adds a small mid lift so the voice sits forward.
Tips for a better kid voice
- Talk faster and with more excitement; children rarely speak in a slow monotone.
- For a toddler, try the Baby preset (+10 semitones).
- If it sounds like a chipmunk, back the pitch down to +4 or +5.
