8-Bit Voice Changer

The 8-Bit preset crushes your voice to 4-bit resolution and holds each sample ten times, so it comes out crunchy and aliased like dialogue from an old cartridge game.

How the 8-Bit effect works

Two things make audio sound "8-bit". Bit depth: fewer bits means coarser volume steps and audible quantisation noise. Sample rate: holding each sample for several frames (downsampling) folds high frequencies back down as metallic aliasing. The preset uses 4 bits and a 10× hold, raises pitch three semitones and cuts lows below 200 Hz.

Tips for a better 8-bit voice

  • Open the Crush pedal: fewer Bits is noisier, a higher Downsample is more metallic.
  • Short, punchy lines work best; long sentences get tiring to listen to.
  • Pair it with the coin or game-over pads on the soundboard.

Questions

What is a bitcrusher?

An effect that lowers bit depth and sample rate on purpose. It is the core of most 8-bit and lo-fi voice effects.

Is 8-bit the same as chiptune?

Chiptune is music made with (or imitating) old sound chips. An 8-bit voice effect borrows its gritty, low-resolution character for speech.
